I’ve updated the gallery with Jessie’s screen captures as Jo Robinson in Misbehaviour! The film was released in the United Kingdom on 13 March 2020. Due to the 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic the film’s theatrical release was cut short and the film was released early to video on demand on 15 April. Fortunately, the film was successful among critics with the following consensus: “Misbehaviour’s overall arc will be familiar to fans of feelgood British cinema — and so will the way it triumphs over formula to tell a thoroughly crowd-pleasing story“.
The Benedict Cumberbatch movie Ironbark, which debuted to strong reviews at Sundance, has been retitled The Courier and will be released in theaters on Aug. 28 by Lionsgate and sister company Roadside Attractions, it was announced Wednesday.
Dominic Cooke (On Chesil Beach) directed the Cold War spy thriller, which co-stars Rachel Brosnahan, Jessie Buckley and Georgian actor Merab Ninidze.
Tom O’Connor (The Hitman’s Bodyguard) wrote the script, which tells the true story of an unassuming British businessman named Greville Wynne (Cumberbatch), who was recruited into one of the greatest international conflicts in history. At the behest of the UK’s MI-6 and a CIA operative (Brosnahan), Wynne forms a covert, dangerous partnership with Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky (Ninidze) in an effort to provide crucial intelligence needed to prevent a nuclear confrontation and defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The film was produced by Adam Ackland, Ben Browning, Ben Pugh and Rory Aitken, and executive produced by Leah Clarke, Ashley Fox, Glen Basner, Alison Cohen, Milan Popelka and Josh Varney, as well as Cumberbatch, Cooke and O’Connor. The production also boasts cinematography from Sean Bobbitt, who shot 12 Years a Slave and The Place Beyond the Pines, as well as an original score from Abel Korzeniowski (A Single Man).
“Theaters have indicated gradual openings this summer, with health and safety guiding the way. If everything proceeds favorably, we feel the true spy thriller The Courier, with a must-see performance by Benedict Cumberbatch, is just the type of film that will have audiences excited to return to their local cinemas in late August,” Roadside co-presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff said in a joint statement.
Cumberbatch was nominated for an Oscar for 2015’s The Imitation Game, but to be honest, I think anyone who played Alan Turing in that film was probably destined for a nomination. The Courier is a different kind of movie, but legitimate or not, it earned Cumberbatch awards buzz coming out of Sundance, where naturally, I failed to see it. Of course, things have changed since January, and while a late August release doesn’t scream “contender” to me, the mere fact that this film is getting a theatrical release at all in the current climate speaks to the studios’ confidence in the material. Still, this is aimed at older, upscale audiences, and those may be the last people to return to theaters once restrictions lift.
As for the title change, I’d say it’s pretty negligible, as neither one is great. Oh well! What’s in a name anyway? Cumberbatch isn’t a great name for a movie star, but I’d say he’s doing just fine. Pathe has brought forward the online release of Keira Knightley and Gugu Mbatha-Raw starring Miss World pic Misbehaviour by three months after its theatrical play was cut short by the coronavirus shutdowns. The movie was rolled out in the UK on March 13, grossing $426,765 in its opening weekend before all cinemas in the country were shuttered. Now, it will be available across digital platforms from April 15. Jessie Buckley also stars in the feature about how a group of women activists disrupted the 1970 Miss World pageant.

‘Misbehaviour‘ will premiere tomorrow in UK cinemas, however, several critics have already had the opportunity to watch the film in the various screenings of the feature that have been held in recent weeks. So, see what they are talking about Jessie’s performance as Jo Robinson:
Buckley, having an outstanding run this year after Chernobyl, Wild Rose and even her supporting role in Judy, is once again luminous and a mistress of comic timing as the feisty Northerner Jo, a communal dweller who becomes one of the movement’s leaders. Between Knightley’s cool intelligence and Mbatha-Raw’s serene elegance, there is room for Jessie Buckley to shine as a strong, spirited feminist and for Lesley Manville and Keeley Hawes to be patiently long-suffering as Bob and Eric’s respective partners. Even for those who remember the events of that time, Misbehaviour is full of engaging detail as faces from the faded headlines come back to life. Knightley’s serious, uptight academic is a great role for the actor, while Mbatha-Raw’s performance is pitched precisely as a dignified woman who found herself in a rare and difficult position. Jessie Buckley is Jo Robinson – the punchy direct-action enthusiast, keen on graffiti-ing ad hoardings and cranking out agitprop leaflets on Gestetner machines. Misbehaviour gives us ringside seats at the 1970 Miss World beauty pageant – otherwise known as the one with the flour-flinging, a bomb under a BBC van, and the first winner of colour taking the crown. What a heady mess this event was. The leaders of the protestors – Sally Alexander (Keira Knightley) and Jo Robinson (Jessie Buckley) – skirt either side of the feminist diaspora. The former is a middle-class single mum and an intellectual Oxford graduate, the latter a sexually liberated activist hippy who lives in a squat and can’t recall or doesn’t care who fathered her baby. New film Misbehaviour, which stars Keira Knightley, might just change your way of thinking.
Set in 1970, the comedy-drama follows the events of that year’s Miss World competition, which was disrupted by a group of feminist activists who wanted to “overthrow the patriarchy”.
The film is told through the perspectives of members of the Women’s Liberation Movement, the Miss World contestants and the ceremony’s host, Bob Hope (here played by Greg Kinnear).
In an exclusive featurette, the film’s cast reflect upon the importance of the event, which came as the movement began to affect great change to women’s rights throughout the world.
“It was bigger than the World Cup – it was bigger than the Olympics,” Knightley says, with co-star Jessie Buckley adding: “In the 1970s, women weren’t allowed to dream beyond making a cupcake.”
Knightley says that placing the spotlight on such an event will “make you question what you think” regardles of “who you agree or sympathise with”.
For Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who plays Jennifer Hosten – the first woman of colour to win Miss World – it was important for the film to have a crew comprised of women.
“[It has] female writers [Gaby Chiappe, Rebecca Fray]), a female director [Philippa Lowthorpe], all female producers [Suzanne Mackie, Sarah-Jane Wheale] – the female gaze is so strong in this film,” she said.
Misbehaviour arrives in UK cinemas on 13 March.
Oscar-winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Jessie Buckley (Chernobyl), Dakota Johnson (Bad Times At The El Royale) and Peter Sarsgaard (Jackie) are set to star in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut The Lost Daughter, we can reveal.
Endeavor Content will launch world sales at the upcoming EFM on Gyllenhaal’s adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s hit novel. This will be one of the hot projects at the market for sure.
Producing are Gyllenhaal, and Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman-Keren, through their company Pie Films and Charlie Dorfman. Endeavor Content and Charlie Dorfman, through his Samuel Marshall Productions, are the financiers.
The film will follow Leda (Colman), an elegant college professor on a seaside summer vacation, who becomes consumed by Nina (Johnson) and her young daughter, as she watches them on the beach. Unnerved by their compelling relationship, and their raucous and menacing extended family, she becomes overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion and intensity of early motherhood.
Forced to consider the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and the consequences they had for her family, she begins to unravel. Lost in ways she can’t explain, she finds herself caught in the strange and ominous world of her own mind.
Gyllenhall said, “When I finished reading Elena Ferrante’s The Lost Daughter, I felt that something secret and true had been said out loud. And I was both disturbed and comforted by that. I immediately thought how much more intense the experience would be in a movie theatre, with other people around. And I set to work on this adaptation. I find that the script has attracted other people interested in exploring these secret truths about motherhood, sexuality, femininity, desire. And I’m thrilled to continue my collaboration with such brave and exciting actors and filmmakers.”
Pie Films recently produced 2019 Berlin Golden Bear winner Synonyms by Nadav Lapid as well as the two versions of drama The Kindergarten Teacher. Gyllenhaal starred in the U.S. version, which won a Sundance directors award 2018.
